So, I've begun to build myself a barb and went down the two-weapon fighting route. I'm at level 4 right now but can't seem to hit anything for toffee. Is there something that I'm missing somewhere? Is a balance between the two weapons used important, as in do you have to have specific weapons for them to be of any use?

Without the two weapon fighting feat, your chance to hit anything with your offhand is 20%

You can take the following feats progressively (and the % to hit with your offhand)

Two-weapon fighting (40%)
Improved Two Weapon Fighting (60%)
Greater Two-Weapon Fighting (80%)

Oversized Two-Weapon Fighting removes the to-hit penalty when using a weapon that is not a light weapon on your offhand. Normally you suffer a -2 penalty to hit if your offhand weapon is not light.

Don't confuse these with your attack roll - I recommend reading this carefully:

How to Hit Things

*pay special attention to "Equipment & Proficiency Modifiers"

OK, so I have one light weapon in my off-hand and a normal one in my other hand. I have the first two-weapon fighting feat, so the only thing I can think of is that I'm not proficient in either of the weapons or my armor... otherwise, I have no idea!

Hmm, well I thought I had the two-weapon feat because I chose the two-weapon fighting build from the create character menu. However, it didn't think of giving me that feat :s it's also dealt me a low blow with only 11 dexterity Sad

Never a dull moment and always a learning experience in DDO.

Took me a long time to get my head around two weapon fighting (TWF).

It's "generally" accepted that TWF generates more damage per second (DPS) than two-handed fighting (THF).

However, my new bard is a THF, making it much easier to allocate stat points (e.g. no crummy dex requirements).

The DPS difference between TWF and THF is constantly argued about (how to measure, what counts, etc.).

The developers did nerf both TWF and THF in the last update, further confounding matters.

Thus, sometimes while debating the details of TWF and THF DPS, we wonder WTF is really true. Laughing

Yeah, my first toon is a rogue, and so she has TWF, but at the lower levels she wasn't hitting much. She got better as she grew up, and then I learned duh, it's because her dex is better now. Being a rogue, I have a lot of dex anyway. My newer rogue I'm working on, now that I know slightly more, I just run with one weapon for now. Her stats are still kinda low for TWF, and she misses like crazy if I try it. I'll let her grow up a bit more too before she starts swinging more metal.

my ranger has an unbuffed dex of 30, which isn't bad for an adventurer build, but is very much needed for TWF.

he also has over-sized TWF, and he is tempest 3, so he does ok on his to hit rolls. Smile

Well, I'm not going to re-spec just yet. I think I'll wait to see what the half-orcs are like and then build a new barbarian from scratch... I think I know what's necessary now as I've made mistakes and have hopefully learnt from them (Surely half-orcs will make excellent barbarians... don't you think?)!

Indeed. I expect to see a horde of barbarian half orcs running around the harbour next week. ^^

I've been really happy with my THF bard - no problems chop-chopping my way through bad guys.

When I still played DDO, I had one character that did two weapon fighting. Worked best for me if I had a sword in one hand and a dagger in the other.

That's definitely the way to do it if you don't want the oversized weapon penalty.

However, if you have the right buffs, then you can get away with using two large weapons (penalty be damned).

For example, my pally gets Divine Might 4, Divine Favor, Zeal, and Prayer going then I'm set to smite evildoers.

Using Exalted Smite 4 and a Bloodstone, I can potentially doublestrike for 1,200 HP of damage (600 per GS khopesh).

The -2 penalty doesn't really matter when your BAB is +20 and you're a KOTC pally with all those to-hit buffs. Cool

I don't have room for the Oversized Two-Weapon Fighting feat but I do have the rest of the TWF feats:

Two-weapon fighting
Improved Two Weapon Fighting
Greater Two-Weapon Fighting

So, if you don't have room for all four TWF feats, then just drop oversized Two-Weapon Fighting.

Ranger Tempest 3 with OTWF and ITWF ftw.

And the -2 or -4 penalty isn't much to worry about until you are doing epic, then its just swing and miss until the are held lol

I've been having fun running Quasqueton around with her two min-2 khopeshes.

Haven't dusted her off since the level cap was 20.

Old school toon - she's an antique. Cool
