PostSubject: PC Build Advice   Wed Aug 28, 2013 8:49 pm

Hey guys, over the past few days i've been looking into what makes up a Gaming PC, so I'm confident I know what is most important in a decent system. With that it mind, I'm hopeless at picking out specific parts with a low budget in mind and trying to get as much out of my precious euros :DIf you don't mind, could someone who knows what they're talking about tell me what's right and wrong about these parts? I choose what I thought was right but when It came down to mother board or CPU cooler I kinda just picked the cheapest.. This is definitely a work in progress >,<

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

CPU:  AMD A4-5300 3.4GHz Dual-Core Processor  ($48.99 @ NCIX US)
CPU Cooler:  Evercool EC-NK804A-925EP 47.2 CFM CPU Cooler  ($13.98 @ Newegg)
Motherboard:  Biostar A55ML2 Micro ATX FM2 Motherboard  ($38.25 @ Newegg)
Memory:  Corsair Vengeance LP 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866 Memory  ($49.99 @ Newegg)
Storage:  Kingston SSDNow V200 Series 64GB 2.5" Solid State Disk  ($52.99 @ Newegg)
Storage:  Western Digital Caviar Green 3TB 3.5" 5400RPM Internal Hard Drive  ($114.99 @ Microcenter)
Video Card:  XFX GeForce GT 610 2GB Video Card  ($51.24 @ Amazon)
Case:  HEC Enterprise MicroATX Mid Tower Case  ($19.99 @ Microcenter)
Power Supply:  CoolMax 700W 80 PLUS Bronze Certified ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply  ($44.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $435.41
(Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.)

*prepares to hear how terrible he is at picking stuff*

Not bad, but processor is going to bottleneck you fairly quickly, and the video card is kinda crappy.

most of the time a good video card jacks up the price...those are some expensive things.

Sometimes, is worth it to check Ebay. Is where I got my PC. I was going to build one, and found one on Ebay that was about 300 bucks less than if I put it together myself.

Been really happy with it, and I can upgrade the thing as I go.

A lot of it really depends on your patience. If you take your time, you can pick and choose great parts for great sale prices. If you want to get it all and put it right together right away, is going to cost some more.

Just give a price range and what you are trying to do with it, and we'll help you out.

I always see them included in the price list but I assumed as I have it on this laptop I could just use witchcraft to transfer it over? :/

Most computers come with a OEM version of the OS. Disks that come with it are just driver backups typically.

Unless you purchased the OS in the past, probably not possible to transfer the OS. You can pirate one, but that's one thing I wouldn't pirate myself so couldn't help you there.

See if you have actual disks that could install on a new pc. Smile

Video Card:  EVGA GeForce GT 640 4GB Video Card  ($109.99 @ Amazon)

O.K I'm thinking this would be a decent Video Card then, right? >,<

CPU:  AMD Athlon II X2 370K 4.2GHz Dual-Core Processor  ($56.24 @ Amazon)

In terms of GHz, this was top of the list, but a 4.1GHz Quad-Core was 150$ ... Worth the price increase??? (I read somewhere that BF4[As i'm putting this together with future games in mind] recommended Quad-core processor but.. really?)

Pretty sure If I'm patient i'd have about 400-500 Euro to spend on a computer as that's what I'd spend on a new laptop.
(530-660$)

It's not only what you put in it but too how you use it.
Make sure to install a good overclocking program, keep your pc clean, install win 7 but change it to win xp performance, which is frankly better than win 7 performance.

If you got a power user windows cd, you can use it infinite times to install windows.

Make sure the front side bus speed on the motherboard is decent as well. I didn't see it listed on the site there. That's where your CPU pulls information from your memory through, as well as other components. Even with a good CPU and plenty of memory if your front bus speed sucks = slower computer.

Also, I prefer Linux over Windows every day of the week. Want/need both? Dual boot machines are always fun. XD

Glad to see this thread- my laptop is on its last legs but luckily I tracked down some malware today that was seriously choking it.  I've got some time to figure it out hopefully, and I'm toying with building from scratch as well.

For a gaming pc I always take win 7 and then strip all the excessive stuff off it so you end with a pc like win xp but which uses all the resources of win 7.
If you want to duel boot and have linux too then take something like Puppy or Pear. They're really nice.

And most important don't mess up your own pc. I don't know how people get all those virusses on their pc but you won't get them by doing normal things. When you're just downloading and installing everything or going to a lot of adult content sites, well then that explains.

It piggybacked onto something else- DivX and Skype both had updates the same day. Suppose it will happen once or twice in 20 years of messing with computers, just glad I caught the sucker.

Hey there Smudge, still need help on this?

Check out Boards.ie where you can go onto their subforum PC Building & Upgrading and fill out a form detailing your specific needs and some peeps will suggest entire builds for you!

here's the template
PC Template wrote:

1. What is your budget?
[€xxx]

2. What will be the main purpose of the computer? [Gaming/Video editing/3D Modelling/HTPC/Internet] (If gaming include which games)

3. Do you need a copy of Windows? [Yes/No]

4. Can you use any parts from an old computer? [Hard drive/DVD Drive/Case/PSU/etc.]  (If possible state brand and model of the parts to ensure compatibility)

5. Do you need a monitor? [Yes/No]

5a. If yes, what size do you need. [19'/20'/22'/24'/etc.]

5b. If no, what resolution is your current monitor and do you plan to upgrade in the near future?
[1920x1080/1440x900/etc.] [Yes/No]

6. Do you need any of these peripherals? [Keyboard/Mouse/Wireless Card/Card Reader/Speakers/etc.]

7. Are you willing to try overclocking? [Yes/No]

8. How can you pay? [Bank Transfer/Credit Card/Laser]

9. When are you purchasing? [In x days]

10. If you need help building it, where are you based? [South Dublin City/Cork City/Kerry/etc.]
You can leave some questions blank like where do you live and how will you pay. That's just in the scenario where you pay some bloke to help you set it up.

Only thing is, you need an account and all the prices listed are in Euro. Smile

Who the hell bought the last of my video card. I was literally going to buy it tonight, and it's sold out; and I am too stubborn to pay an extra 20 bucks because the one I wanted sold out.

Grrrr.

Used to build my own computers 10 years ago and was pretty good at it.

I'd always joke that I could build you a $500 computer for $1000.

Ironically, it's saved me money for the past 6-7 years because I've just been swapping parts back and forth from the 4-5 computers I owned.

Currently have a 2006-era Dell 4700 that I've just kept upgrading. Last video card I bought was about $100.00 - always used ATI cards but this one's a NVIDIA.

They say you shouldn't future-proof when you buy computers, but this one has served me well.

Yea I really like Nvidea, but this new pc came with a AMD.

AMD drivers are crappy, but was really happy with the performance vs. cost of the AMD's. I am hoping my order went through, cuz soon after they were out of stock again....

Just installed new power supply, what a pita the 24 pin connecter was to get out. Even more, its right next to my RAM sticks so not much room to work.

Oh yea, and I had to take out one of the case fans to get the old psu out. I almost put it back in backwards, blowing in... Razz

Now just waiting until my vid card gets here.... Smile

I almost hate to post this, but there are so many options out there I need advice.

I want a fast computer with great graphics, decent sound, a nice monitor (maybe 2?) that I can store lots of pics and video, interfaces well with my mobile device, I want to do Photoshop and some video editing, and play games like Civilization. I'm not into action games much, but like beautiful graphics with no pauses/delays.

I also need a printer to print album-quality pictures.

Total budget is $4,500.

PostSubject: Re: PC Build Advice   Fri Oct 25, 2013 8:46 pm

for 4500 you can have your pick

for about 1000-1500 can get a 'dream pc' really.

Civ 5 is DX 11 heavy, I have it and it runs fine with my low end video card, but I run it in DX 9. meaning the graphics are nothing comparable.

Photoshop can be intensive, I don't have it but I have heard how much resources it can use, but its not as much as video editing....

Hell, I was messing around with an online builder and I couldn't break 2k

Some basic advice:

I5 and I7's rock. They are up to 4th generation now and solid quad core processors. a lot of people will say go with AMD, because they are cheaper and benchmark well. I guess I am an intel guy.
8 gigs ram would be fine, but make sure your motherboard supports at least 16 gigs expansion (newer motherboards go up to 32 gigs easy), while 8 gigs is fine you might decide to get 16 now and not worry about ram later. ram is cheap.
make sure the power supply is at least 600 watt for 1 video card, and at least 750 watt for 2 video cards.
you will want 2 hard drives: 1 as a solid state drive- it is smaller (60-120gigs) but this is just where you place windows. it will make windows boot up in less than 3 seconds!
your second hard drive can be a regular 1 tb drive to keep all your stuff.
video cards are incredibly cheap right now, because they just launched a brand new line of card (R9 by radeon is looking sweet). there are still some very expensive cards (titan is still 1000 bucks), but they are largely unnecessary. i got a 7950 for 180 bucks, if you are really adventurous you can get 2 of the same video cards and run them in tandem (called crossfire or xfire). here is its benchmark:
http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/gpu.php?gpu=Radeon+HD+7950
also gpuboss.com has some nice comparisons:
http://gpuboss.com/gpus/Radeon-HD-7950-Boost-vs-GeForce-GTX-TITAN

as you can see, the titan nearly doubles performance of the card i got. however, it costs 4-5 times the amount. also keep in mind if i got 2 of my cards and ran them in crossfire, it would nearly match the titan for still a fraction of the cost.

i guess, bottom line is: more expensive is not always better. if you know what you need, and know a thing or two about pc components, you'll come out ahead and pay a lot less.

the printer, honestly i always just but 30 buck printers at walmart and never had any problem printing pictures with them, but idk. maybe someone else has some ideas.

i would say 4500 is overkill. for 1500 you can get a really nice rig; and you can get that same rig used or refurbished for 750-1000.

if you are patient, you can probably find a great deal on ebay or something. i got my pc off ebay and been really happy with it. i paid 400 bucks, and to build it myself would have cost me 800 at least!

one thing tho, don't tell any computer place/builder that you have a 4500 budget! they will try to find ways to get you to spend that money.... Razz

monitors aren't that pricey, about 100-150 each. if you get 3 monitors you can use eyefinity, which basically uses all 3 monitors are a single view screen. seems nice, but i sure dont have the desk room for it hehe (you can use the 2-3 monitors for different purposes as well).

i'll keep an eye out for good deals for you. it might be a good idea to look into black friday deals as well.

and oh yea: go with windows 7. windows 8 sucks....
