PostSubject: Web development    Sat Jun 14, 2014 8:39 pm

Hey guys- for those of you who don't know (and might care), I'm in the middle of changing careers somewhat.  I'm seriously contemplating going into web development.  I do have some background coding on different platforms and have been building websites since geocities, but I want to put together a more formal, up to date portfolio.

As such, I've been checking out bootcamps and online programs.  skilledup.com has some good articles about the resources out there, and I really like what Jennifer Dewalt and Adham Dannaway have done.  Any suggestions?

That looks awesome, thanks Rareit.

And thanks Aidann, probably just a slip on a tablet.

I'm making pretty quick work of codecademy so far. Here's what I've found:

Treehouse.com seems to be a pretty good resource for a decent monthly subscription.

Thinkful.com looks like a decent hybrid, with more group work and an assigned mentor. It's a bit steeper, starting at $300/mo (first course usually takes about 3 months), but that might be the next best thing to an in-person bootcamp.

girldevelopit.com has shorter term classes (for women) in several cities, although they don't have anything going on in the city at the moment (plus that's one hell of a commute).

I'm still looking at in-person bootcamps, particularly for the work placement opportunities some of them offer. A friend of mine working at twitter suggested coursera.org for some of the data science stuff to do in parallel.

I also just found an old folder from my first website. Complete with gifs from 1998. XD

Coursera does have some courses but its sometimes hard to catch the rights one on an open session. I'm always a fan of saving money and using all the free resources available. I know of a lot of tutorials and resources and if you post some more information about what it is exactly that you're looking to learn I'd be glad to share what I know about learning resources.

I'm leaning towards front-end development, so I need to catch up on html and css as well as learn javascript/ jquery and ruby. My php and python have been very situation specific so far. I've spent too much time in higher ed, so the idea of someone saying, "you need to learn x,y,z," is appealing.

http://www.w3schools.com/

I use this for good referencing when stuck on stuff. When you finished your web development, give me a hola and I will explain about cloud hosting and the best places online to get a hosting site for your websites.

If you learn PHP also, its a powerful tool to integrate into your websites for more interactive panels and dashlets.

Thanks Luffy, after a binge on codecademy, I've taken a bit of a break. It's just too buggy and fragmented for me. Soon as my next pay check comes through, I'm going to sign up for thinkful- I really need to get back into a job that furthers my career.
