PostSubject: Messing with the character planner   Wed Mar 02, 2011 6:31 am

I'm thinking of greater reincarnating Zillee as she was originally a 28pt build, so will be throwing up various ideas for what to do with those extra points as well as looking at rejigging her feats and points. This is mainly for my reference and I'll also be posting the rejected builds - just to remind myself that I've looked at those options and decided 'no'. I'll be editing in her current build soon.

Et voilà:

First reject - I was tired of Zillee taking a long nap each time she walked into a stray dog so I tried the extra points in intel to get more skill points to boost balance. Yeah I'm happier with the higher balance skill, but really I'm scratching my head over skill points now I'm lvl 20. I dutifully maxed out jump (which I like) and intimidate (meh), but the points in intimidate and the left over points I popped into spot seem like a waste. I can't out intimidate the tanks (and don't want to), and I'm pretty sure if there's anything to spot at the latter stages she won't have a high enough score to do so. Honestly, just thinking of not bothering with intimidate and shoving all the points into jump, balance and tumble. And for that I don't need the extra skill points. Other changes that I might keep from this one, a third feat of toughness, for which I think I sacrificed luck of the hero or something like that.

Is Zillee your highest toon? If so you may want to hold off, what i have read is that you use that you use your highest toon to farm for your lower toons, once you get a sceond toon up , then TR one of them.

Well that might be the case ... for others? I didn't raise up Zillee from a country bumpkin to fighting machine to then let her rot as a farmer =) I figure that if I'm going to be playing her a lot to grind for the good gear I might as well get her in top notch shape!

I did the same with Gilders at about level 14 - he was a bit gimped (and a 28 pt build) so I greater reincarnated him. Never looked back Smile

I'm not sure that 12 INT on a fighter is a good idea. It's nice to have the extra skill points, but they could go to better use elsewhere (Max STR/CON and I often see players put points into DEX, despite being THF).

I also read something on the forums today about Great Cleave not being very useful... I didn't read it carefully, but it seemed as though it might not work or something, this was the thread:

Yeah, personally I would dump wisdom completely and knock intel down by 2 points and then put those 4 into 2 more points of constitution.

I don't know much about fighters so I'm not much help otherwise Laughing

a lot of people seem to not like great cleave since it lowers your DPS and most people just go for twtich attacks which are annoying but very effective.

I think greater cleave does work, it just slows your attack speed down. I had a read around the ddo forums and it is hard to find anyone who has a good word to say about it. Twitch attacks I need to learn more about =) Ran around the houses several times trying to work out how to get the feats I wanted without messing up the build. Still thinking about swapping luck of heroes out for sap.

Anyhooo, yup, threw the extra pts into con and a bit more dex (as I couldn't get any more con). Was tempted to hang onto the wisdom as my will saves ain't good, but again forum chat tends to say don't worry about it as buffs tend to be given ouut to help with that.

Continuing to mess around with skill points - drastically reduced intimidate so that when I pop the intim helm on it'll only hit the low 20s. Not 100% sure about this decision and I may wander into the fighter forum to ask the experts there.

Also had major dilemma over the last 8 enhancement points, but in the end swapped out Improved Recovery II for Haste Boost IV, and stayed with Critical Accuracy IV to make those crit hits count, given the crit range on the GA is only 18-20. Stunning Blow IV was another contender, but I want to see how the epic maul goes before I make a final decision there.

Potential 32 pt build!

Code:
In every game there are people who play to win, and people who play for the game. The problem comes when you combine them in the same party. While in theory a party is six people trying for the same goal, to accomplish the quest objectives, in practice there tend to be six people with six at least slightly different (and sometimes majorly different) sets of goals.

This isn't limited to just MMOs, of course. Another of my gaming loves is First Person Shooters. No booing from the peanut gallery, please.  I always play objective missions when I get online, not deathmatch. But in every objective mission online you'll have several sets of people:

1) The lost. Usually either new to the game or new to the map, the lost have no idea what they're doing. They are more likely to turn up in the other side's killscore repeatedly than to help out much, but they can surprise you. Often times all the lost needs is someone willing to take a few moments to give the classic civilian's guide to "congratulations, you're being invaded". This is your rifle. Bullets come out of that end. You load it here. This is the trigger. Here's your ammo. This is where you look to point it. Your enemy is the guys that are not dressed like me. Point it at them and pull that trigger till it stops firing, then reload like I showed you. Good luck. Given a quick overview by an effective veteran, the lost can tag along and actually contribute if they're just inexperienced rather than incompetent. If they're incompetent too, then at least they're an extra target who isn't you, and hopefully the server doesn't allow friendly fire.

2) The killscores. Despite playing an objective-based map where their team loses if the objective is not completed, this player is only concerned about topping the scoreboard on kills. If they lead the killboard and their team loses 30-0, they still consider themselves the winners. They only belong on deathmatch servers, but they still play on yours. The best you can hope for with the killscore is that the enemy spends so much time dying at the hands of the killscore that the rest of your team has a chance to complete the mission.

3) The loner. The loner doesn't work with anyone, but unlike the killscore or the lost, he's aware of the objective and actively working to accomplish it. If he's decently competent, he's probably contributing to your success even though he's no good at interacting and coordinating with the rest of you. If he's exceptionally competent, you're probably seeing a lot of "<enemy> was killed by loner" or "loner has captured the enemy flag!" messages. He might be a zerger simply too good for the enemy to touch, or he might be the sniper popping headshots from no one knows where, or the special ops guy sneaking around the enemy base. You can count on him to be doing something useful but you can't count on him to help you out.

4) The team player. Whether a leader or a follower, the team player is coordinating with the rest of you, filling his role and watching out for his teammates to need help. This is usually the one that's the most fun just to *be* with, where the player interactions are more the source of fun than the fact of completing a mission.

5) The tagalong. He's there. But nobody really knows where on the map he is or whether he's contributing anything at all. He's not getting shot much, nor shooting a lot of the enemy. He doesn't capture the flag, or appear at your side to save your neck. You won, or perhaps you lost, but either way you're not really sure he had any role at all in either. He was just there.

Jump is nice, but with your str modifier (will give you +10 jump at 30 STR) and a jump spell will give you 40 jump which is max without spending all them skill points. Amrath clickies (Morah's belts) give you 30 jump spell, so will the 30 min spell buff from house P, or the festival cookies ect. depending on your armor check penalty, you might only want to add 10 or so points into jump.

Spot is not just for traps, it will help you spot enemies that are hidden. It is not something to max out, but is useful for any melee.
Balance and intimidate are always good to have as a fighter, but is preference. intimidate helps keep clerics and caster alive, balance helps you get back up when knocked down.

About feats, quick draw, iron will, lightning reflexes seems not too handy. Your reflex and will saves will still be too low to be noticeable difference. If you really wanted to you can get more by taking resilience, which is a mode you can switch to that gives you a +4 to all saves (with penalty to hit) while it is on; but no one is ever going to expect a fighter to survive a lot of fireballs, traps, and hold persons.. Wink
I would personally have added the dodge/mobility/spring attack line myself, because without it you lose +4 to hit if you attack while moving. i rarely stand in one place and swing at enemies, i move around a lot to prevent being flanked. You will need a minimum DEX of 13 to take the dodge feat.

also, i like cleave myself on my fighter, but never got to try great cleave yet. Smile

I rather like great cleave honestly, though the twitch attacks do let you deal a stupid amount of damage

Mmm more food for thought there, definitely. I like the look of that belt. I currently use a jump clicky that adds +10 which with the strength mod gets me up to 42. Didn't realise 40 was the max ^^ I'll have another play around with the skills.

I'm going to hold onto quick draw. I want to start practising more with stunning blow, and want to be able to swap the ratkiller in and out quickly mid-melee so I can then use a greataxe to get the max from the crits if I successfully stun a mob. Although it's just a bare half second of time saved in swapping weapons, I kinda like it.

But yeah, I think you're right about the other feats - and looking at spring attack line, that would likely be more useful. Especially when trying to chase a mob that someone else has aggroed. I'll do some more puttering about with the feats ^^

Okay someone tell me about twitch attacks. See it often referred to but never explained on the ddo forums. bounce

twitching is only with great axes really, the other THF weapon speeds are much slower than great axe.

they have also changed a lot of things and tried to fix the twitch attack, but all they did was change the glancing blows.

what it is, is you make 2 attacks, then you move left or right to reset your animation. instead of making the 3rd long swing attack, you go back to the faster first 2. you reset your attack bonus but you gain attack speed, somewhere along the line of a few extra hits per minute.

imo its not a make or break thing to do, but can be helpful against mobs that are auto-crit or mobs that have a ton of HP. to me its just annoying to do, and the people that insist that anyone with a great axe must play this way are even more annoying (like axer lol)

example (video by axer):

More notes for myself - rambling on, but chip in if you feel like it.

Four and a half months later and I'm wondering whether I want to reincarnate or not. I'm happy with Zillee as she is, and not sure I have the patience of the epic grind. Sure the ESoS would be nice and I do kinda like the dragon raid now I know whats going on there - basically I pike for Von5 and then contribute in Von6. And the epic Von 1 and 2 are pretty quick and painless runs too. But the drops for the scrolls/shards/seals seem pretty rare. Also tried the epic chrono which again can be fun if with a group that has a sense of humour, but tbh not even checked out what gear it has at epic for a melee. I should I suppose be looking at the epics in red fens for the bracers/gloves there but I didn't like those quests much at lvl so not going whoopee at the thought of a grind there and ditto for the carnival.

So kinda thinking if I'm not going to bother with the epic grind, then what is left to do for the lass before a TR? Well, on the short list is the following:

1) favour grind to unlock FVS. I have continued to not enjoy clericing but the FVS could be a different prospect - healing capability, melee capability and those wings ^^ I've got around another 200 favour to get to unlock that class on Khyber.

2) Silver Flame favour for their special healing pots. This is something I've been half-heartedly pursuing as I don't really enjoy the necro quests. And to get that favour it looks like I'll have to do most (if not all) of necro 4 on elite. But it would be cool to have access to those healing pots.

3) Yugo favour again for the fancy pots. Which means doing the amrath quests on higher difficulty. Very rare to find groups for that.

4) Some more GS items. A triple positive maul, and a few other bits and bobs.

5) When the hallowe'en festival returns, an upgrade of my mabar cloak

6) If the crystal cove returns, some grinding there for a few pieces that need upgrades

7) Some continuing of running of raids in the hope of +3 tomes for a TR? I do tend to throw money at turbine points as this is a hobby I enjoy and so the +2 tomes, while nice, aren't essential as I'll just supreme tome the girl at lvl 7 when she TRs.

Number 1 and 4 are perhaps the only ones I really consider essential before TRing - the others are all extra fluff.

But then I wonder if I do want to TR. I wouldn't be doing it to become a better fighter. The passive past life feat for fighters is an extra +1 to attack rolls and a +1 to the DCs of the fighers tactical feats. Well ... I don't need an extra +1 for attack rolls. I can hit things fine already. And I'm very lazy when it comes to using the tactical feats. Rarely remember to use stunning blow or trip ... Okay so there's a few more points to put into stats at the start. MMmmm okay, strength is already maxed, and I would gain another 20 hp from maxing out con. Hardly earth shattering. I could in theory just lesser reincarnate again and take toughness 3 more times instead of on tactical stuff I don't use and push her hp over 700 unbuffed...

So I think the decision I need to make is ... do I keep my fighter as she is with another LR to bump up her hp, or do I TR her into something like a monk or a barb and then pick up those past lifes (which are far sexier than the fighter past life) before returning her to a fighter.

I shall ponder this some more!

4) Some more GS items. A triple positive maul, and a few other bits and bobs.

Finished getting the favour for FVS today! After reading the different builds on the ddo forum I'm thinking the soul survivor build appeals more than the evoker - focusing on melee/tank/healing. And it means I get to try out a WF too *grins* So if you see a newbie WF FVS join the guild, that's mine Wink

And with the triple positive maul done too, I'm all happy. Taking a breather from raids for the next couple days so I'm off timer for Bella's birthday drunken raid train. Woot!

Prepping for a LR repec when the damage boost changes come with U11. Starter points maxing out strength and con. Dropping spring attack line for more toughness feats. Will be crafting my veriks set for additional to hit and boost turns.

ETA: Possibly dropping con to 17 and eating the +3 tome I have to make up the difference. Then putting the 3 extra points into wis, intel and charisma so they come up to 11 each, which is what I need if I ever get the SF pots so I don't become helpless. Finishing con with +6 item, ship buff and exception +1 and +2 would then be 28.

Finishing strength would be 39 unless I either eat the +3 strength tome I've been hoarding, or hold out for a decent tod ring set that has the exceptional +1 strength. Or craft the +1 needed onto my armour, although its late right now and can't remember off hand what is possible to craft on that. Not sure I wanted to do that as was wanting to but the 20 healing amp there and so stop wearing the leviks bracers, or something else. Still debating. Could either go for 17 as a starting strength and be satisfied with a 38 strength overall, but I kinda like have the 40 strength before party buffs/boosts/rages. Blah, tired need to sleep.

Um, not 100% sure who has them, think barbarians and some races, but they're an enhancement line for humans under human versatility (20 second boosts to saves, attack, damage, ac and skills). Never really bothered with them as the damage booster only added a small amount of damage for 20 seconds, +2 at the first tier and +5 the 4th - so a lot of points spent for a small return.

With U11 though, the damage boost is being changed to a percentage increase - up to 25% at the 4th tier. So if I smack a mob for 80 damage, it will actually be 100 damage. As this boost is on a different timer to my fighter haste boost and kensai boost ... well, lets just say that's very tasty ^^

For barbarians, its a great change as they had to take the barbarian damage boost line as a prerequisite for other stuff - so that's helped those poor dears get over the coming nerf to the barb past life Laughing

Anyhoo, another good reason to choose human as a race!

yea they are going to be great. im glad my ranger already has rogue haste boost and human versatility, is already fairly useful but will be great when changed.

you can click them both at the same time too, so haste+damage boost in boss fights work out well.

The main difference is dropping one of the toughness feats for improved sunder and taking some of the fighter tactics for sunder in the enhancements. Note to self to not forget about the exceptional +1 strength needed somewhere (ring/augment slot/tome)

ETA. Possible to upgrade the brawling gloves to tier 3, then slot the exceptional strength into the augment slot (25 dungeon tokens, 5 raid tokens). As I never take those off, makes the most sense unless I get a decent tod set with the exceptional strength in the near future. Basically shooting for the encrusted ring. That will fit better with the kensai set. Chances of pulling it? Teeny ^^ Never even seen it drop!
