Just got home from the pub, where I was playing pool (and kicking butt) with some twentysomething Irish guy with the most amazing eyes... And he told me to facebook him, lol. I'm so not feeling my age tonight, and it has nothing to do with the amount of Jack-n-coke in my system. Yeah, it was a good night.

Ive just started a PhD last week, my topic is Roman Spain, that will keep me occupied for the next 3-4 years. It is a bit discouraging that after having completed 4 years of colleage already and having another 4 on the way it is not likely that ill ever get a job in this field...however i am optimistic and im going to do my best so i can lecture one day, if not ill write historical novels, i hope some of you will read them hehe

Things are good,
I got accepted into my top choice college a month ago. Been keeping my grades up, maintaining a 3.3 even with senioritis lol.

I got into a bit of trouble with the cops, have to pay a $25 fine basically and show up in court...no criminal charge though.

Been playing less RK and enjoying it although running for council now so that will change.

Roman Spain is incredibly interesting! I am currently writing an essay for my AP Euro class about Architecture in Nazi Germany , my thesis is that Hitler reflected his new National Socialist Government through a new form of architecture.

As much as I hate the Nazi's, they made such good architecture

I didn't knew that the Germans made good architecture in WW2, that's something new for me. But what I know is that the germans had the best technology and the best inventions during world war II.
In fact a lot we use today is based on European technology or European scientist from ww2.

And how's my life treating me.
You got those days that you need to go to somewhere but you don't want to go yet. Every moment you say, I'll go next hour and you do something else. after a while you know that you have to go now, otherwise it's closed and you can't go anymore. You take your shoes and your coat and suddenly you see that it starts raining...

I remember watching some of a documentary last year on television about Hitler's architecture plan during WW2. It talked about how he wasn't too phased about people bombing Berlin because he said it only made it easier for him to rebuild the place as he wanted later. He actually had a plan for the capital of his new world.

Not the best picture but you can google for yourself if you like. That dome structure is hugely massive by the way; Wikipedia - "The building would have been over 200 metres high and 250 metres in diameter, sixteen times larger than the dome of St. Peter's." While obviously I'm glad he didn't win, I've got to admit that this is a nice looking city.

Well yes, my thesis is that the Nazi's used architecture as another avenue to gain power.

A great book on it is Hitler and the power of aesthetics.

Now, here is a good question, if Hitler had been born in biblical times or even up till the Renaissance would he have been seen as a bad person in today's history?
Hitler was obsessed with Roman culture so I will use Julius Caeser as an example. When Caesar invaded Gaul, it is estimated that he may have killed over a million Gauls yet we look upon him somewhat favorably. We can also use Alexander the Great as an example, did he not destroy countless cities and villages and build new Hellenestic cities? In today's terms that would be called ethnic cleansing.

It is just a very interesting topic to see how leaders would be percieved had they been in a different time.

Of course I do not believe Hitler was a good person, lost quite a few family members due to the SS.

I tend to be a bit controversial as far as this is concerned. The scientific and psychological progress made by the Nazi regime due to an abandonment of 'ethics'*, especially in the field of psychology, has given us insights that we would not have without the cruelty perpetrated. Looking at it from a totally dispassionate perspective, we need to have that kind of freedom to increase our understanding of people. An extreme example would be this; what is the best way to study what happens if I apply heat to living flesh? Easy, I have two groups of volunteers, one group gets burned and the control group doesn't. The results get analysed and bob's your uncle. Right? Wrong, because 'ethics' says that we can't actually burn people! So consequently, science is hindered by 'ethics' something that didn't apply to Nazi scientists. Does this mean that I think we should abandon scientific ethics and do whatever we like to people? Of course not (although I know a of a couple of people I would love to experiment on lol), but it does show how good can come from something that is termed bad. Of course we can't conduct cruel experiments on people (or animals for that matter) but we can't deny the advancements we have now because another group did not share our morality.

So why did I say that my view is controversial? I am Jewish - so should hate everything about Hitler and the Nazis lol! Yes, ethnic cleansing anywhere at any time in History is really bad for those who are 'cleansed', but that doesn't mean those doing heinous acts aren't also capable of contributing positively in other ways. I guess I am just able to see things in more than one way.

* by ethics here I don't mean individual ethics (sometimes used interchangeably with 'morals'), but how it is defined here: "Professional ethics encompass the personal and corporate standards of behaviour expected of professionals"

kudos to you bekah ;-)

lordmatthew, im an ancient historian and i consider not julius caesar but also pompey, scipio, augustos and a lot of the roman leaders as genocides, vile murderers, bullies...

in fact most scholars would see them in this way, also alexander, but with alexander im on the group of those who know he was terrible but im absolutely fascinated by him.

so yes if hitles would have been born a long time ago he would still be seen as a terrible murderer ;-)

You can say what you want from the Germans but somewhere in 1935 they had the best technology, the best army, the best economy, the best architecture plans and the best scientists. Except it's very tragic that they had to start a war and do their bad things to people.
The power of their nation is build on seeing humans, that don't fit their picture, not anymore as a human and that's really bad.

If we look now to which nations don't hate the nazis then we come to Iran. This is one of the only places where you may read and sell the book "Mein Kampf" publicly. But no problem, their atomic programma is peaceful they say...

I'm not sure they had the best economy. I know that at least the USA (from watching a different documentary... there are so many about Hitler) was loaning a great deal of money to Germany to keep them afloat following the aftermath of WW1. When America's economy exploded in 1929, this caused them to withdraw their money from Germany at some point soon but I don't recall any dates. Anyway, if the German economy was particularly good at this time, there would be no reason for them to loan money from America. Perhaps they had recovered by 1935, I really don't know, I'm just going off a single documentary.

I made a mistake, I beg your pardon. It was 1938-1939. In 20 years they had again a good economy. But we need to say that this is due the war-industry, coal and iron industry and a lot of roadworks. These were all temporary jobs but it is good for an economy.

But back on topic.
My exam of Algebra wasn't good and maybe with some goodwill of the professor I can pass. But that's only a very little change.
